How to Write a Case Study: The Basics
A case study involves an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a particular case or cases, within a real-world context. Generally, a case study can highlight nearly any individual, group, organization, event, belief system, or action. Case study research has been extensively practiced in both the social and natural sciences. As with other social science methods, no single research design dominates case study research. Case studies can use at least four types of designs.
Many students are more inductive than deductive reasoners, which means that they learn better from examples than from logical development starting with basic principles. The use of case studies can therefore be a very effective classroom technique. Case studies are have long been used in business schools, law schools, medical schools and the social sciences, but they can be used in any discipline when instructors want students to explore how what they have learned applies to real world situations.
