Six years ago, I was an avid fan of books; I loved books so much and I always enjoyed reading almost anything about human life experiences, and spirituality. During free times I had at school, I was frequently in our old library reading a lot. The sight of shelves gave me so much joy and peace, that if I were to describe the experience, I felt as if everything I ever needed in life, the answers to all my questions, my dire hunger for knowledge and understanding, were all satisfied every time I was engrossed in reading. It was such a happy memory to look back to. And although I was not into writing yet then, I truly believed that it was my love for books that made me fall in love with words, language, and meaning. But Wainaina seems constitutionally incapable of absorbing anything that would further a career in these fields. The stage is beautiful. We have raided the chapel for fine Anglican velvets and old wood tables with gravitas.
The following version of the novel was used to create this study guide: Wainaina, Binyavanga. Graywolf Press, July 19, Kindle Edition. Binyavanga Wainaina knew he was different from other people even when he was a young child.
